The Vulcan's large diameter and low center of gravity allow it to level out quickly after it is launched. With good launch technique, it will routinely spin for 10 to 15 minutes on a smooth, hard surface.
The upper face of the top has two grooves and the bottom face has a single groove. These three deep grooves together form the hidden Vulcan "V" as seen in the cross-section photo
This top is named after the Vulcan statue in Birmingham, Alabama. The statue depicts the Roman god of fire and forge, and reflects Birmingham's roots in the metals manufacturing industry.

The Vulcan is an incredible top. The craftsmanship, machining, and attention to detail are second to none. An an engineer I like to find the slightest defects that can diminish the overall efficiency, and with this top there’s nothing to be found. Truly a piece of artwork.

The Vulcan is my latest top purchase from SPT, number 6. It is unique in that it is wider and heavier than any of my other tops, an impressive original design. It takes a good solid spin with torque to get it launched, and settles into a smooth steady dynamo quickly. Spins with authority, seemingly unstoppable due to its size and mass. A great addition to the collection, another fine offering from Scovie Precision Turning.

This is a great spinning top, majestic and light and elegant and solid and massive. It spins for a long, long time and is very quiet, even when it starts to oscillate. It has enchanted not only my wife and me, but also our cats. When it spins, they do not try to stop it, they just watch it again, and again, and again. Scovie makes the best tops I know and, over the years, I have collected many tops, some of them high-end and very expensive, but no top is as well made as the Scovie tops.
